On Tuesday, October 21, Maine received news that the 12.5% of Mainers who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, also known as food stamps, won’t receive this vital aid in November as a result of the federal government shutdown. The Foundation for Portland Public Schools is working with school social workers to provide temporary relief to Portland Public Schools families facing food insecurity as a result.

All of the money donated to the PPS Food Fund during this time of crisis will go toward addressing the food insecurity of PPS families arising from the shutdown. Specifically, your contribution will go toward purchasing Hannaford gift cards to give to families affected by the crisis or used to support the Locker Project’s food distribution in the schools.
If you want to help, but can’t afford a donation at this time, here are some other ways to get involved, including volunteer opportunities:
- Spread the word about existing community resources. The Portland Public Schools Community Food Resource Guide includes a list of local food pantries, meal sites, and other resources.
- Donate food to local groups like Locker Project, Wayside, or Preble Street Food Security Hub (please note that each has specific lists of types of food they accept).
